This unit offers an introduction to John and exegesis of selected passages of the Fourth Gospel.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the literary structures and techniques of John’s Gospel, particularly its symbolic framework
  2. demonstrate a knowledge of the theological themes of the Gospel, particularly its understanding of the person and work of Jesus, the theme of glory, eternal life and eschatology
  3. demonstrate a knowledge of the relationship of John’s Gospel to the Synoptic traditions
  4. demonstrate a knowledge of the concerns and context of the Johannine community
