Graduate Diploma in Theology

Course Description: 

The Graduate Diploma in Theology allow students with a degree in a discipline other than theology to gain a broad introduction to theological study, and to begin to specialise in one or more areas.

Entry Requirements: 

The Graduate Diploma in Theology is open to candidates with an undergraduate degree from an Australian University or equivalent.

Course Pathways: 

The GradDipTheol can articulate to the Master of Arts (coursework mode), Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies. Candidates who complete a 12,000 word Research Essay at Distinction standard or higher may be eligible for admission to a research degree.

Graduate Outcomes: 

A graduate who holds the GDT (General) award of the MCD is able to:

  • provide appropriate evidence of the acquisition and critical application of knowledge and skills in the discipline of theology, which may also involve extending knowledge and skills already gained in an undergraduate course or relevant prior work;
  • either
    demonstrate the integration of knowledge or skills acquired in another discipline or relevant prior work with those of the discipline of theology;
    or
    demonstrate the potential to plan and execute a piece of research in the discipline of theology which may also integrate knowledge or skills acquired in another discipline or relevant prior academic work.
Course Volume: 

The Graduate Diploma must be completed in not less than one year and not more than three years.

Modes of Study: 

Students may complete the award through face-to-face classes on campus, or wholly online through TheologyOnline@MCD. Students may complete the award by a mix of face-to-face and online units. The award may be taken part-time or full-time.

Course Structure: 

Students complete 90 points of study (6 standard units) of which at least 45 points (3 standard units) must be at Foundational level. Foundational units must be taken in three disciplines across at least two Fields. Students may then proceed to elective units for which they have completed any prerequisites.
