This seminar unit has two aims (i) to study in depth a selection of the historical liturgical sources – textual, musical, architectural – that have had a major influence in the revision of contemporary liturgies; and (ii) to give the seminar participants exercise in the composition of liturgical material. Topics to be studied may include the rites of baptism, marriage, ordination, funerals. The number of participants will be limited to ten.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Recognise the several differing liturgical genres that constitute the larger forms of liturgical practice
  2. Provide a basic historico-critical account of one of these liturgical genres of the student’s choice
  3. Compose short written examples of several liturgical genres which demonstrate an awareness of the structure and theological framework that are normally found in these genres
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of the ecumenical interaction which has characterised liturgical reform, especially since 1960.

Normally 30 points each in Fields B, C and D
