Master of Divinity

Course Description: 

The MCD Master of Divinity (MDiv) offers a high level of theological study providing an appropriate foundation for further postgraduate study in theology, especially for candidates who complete the degree with Honours.

The innovative and distinctive approach to the theological curriculum of MDiv aims at an integrative, holistic approach to theological study. The study of at least one biblical language (either Greek or Hebrew) is required for all students.

The MDiv is a primary path to ordination for candidates with degrees in areas other than theology. The course offers in-depth study in a range of areas, and a distinctive emphasis on integrative studies.

Entry Requirements: 

The Master of Divinity is open to candidates with a degree (in any area of study) from an Australian University or equivalent.

International students need to have achieved an average IELTS score of at least 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 in each area.

Course Pathways: 

MDiv graduates interested in further studies have several options. Those intending to continue with graduate studies with a broad range of options may consider Master of Theological Studies degree. Graduates wishing to undertake further specialised studies can do so through the Master of Arts (coursework mode).

Candidates who complete a 12,000 word Research Essay at Distinction standard or higher may enter one of the Masters by Research courses.

Graduate Outcomes: 

A graduate who holds the MDiv award of the MCD is able to:

  • provide appropriate evidence of the acquisition and critical application of a systematic and coherent body of knowledge in the discipline of theology, which may also involve extending knowledge and skills already gained in an undergraduate program or relevant prior work;
  • demonstrate a high level of integration of both knowledge and skills in the various disciplines of theology;
  • undertake postgraduate-level research in areas relevant to the specialist studies undertaken, and to comprehend and evaluate new information, concepts and evidence from a range of sources;
  • communicate key ideas and apply problem-solving techniques at an advanced level appropriate to the specialist and integrative studies undertaken;
  • review, consolidate, extend and apply the knowledge and techniques learnt, including interpersonal and cooperative skills appropriate to a professional ministry context and/or further study or collaborative learning.
  • give evidence of having developed a foundation for self-directed and life-long learning.
Course Volume: 

The Master of Divinity must be completed in not less than three and not more than nine years.

Modes of Study: 

Students may complete the award through face-to-face classes on campus, or wholly online through TheologyOnline@MCD. Students may complete the award by a mix of face-to-face and online units. The award may be taken part-time or full-time.

Course Structure: 

Every candidate for the degree must satisfactorily complete, at a standard determined by the Board, a course of studies approved by the Board totalling 270 points:

Foundational studies

Every candidate must undertake 105 points of Foundational units at graduate level, comprising: 30 points in one Biblical Language; 30 points of Biblical Studies; 30 points of Christian Thought and History; and 15 points of Groundwork for Christian Ministry.

Integrative studies

Every candidate must undertake 60 points of Integrative units at graduate level.

Specialised studies

Every candidate must undertake 105 points of Specialist units at graduate level, including at least 60 points in one of the areas of: Biblical Studies; Christian Thought and History; or Christian Life and Ministry.

A candidate may include in their Specialised studies one 12,000-word research essay (30 points).
