This unit explores the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist, and the understanding of ministry in the Christian churches. It aims to help students to understand the biblical bases of sacramental theology and practice, and of Christian Ministry, to identify the mutual shaping of sacramental practice and theology through Christian history, to appreciate critically different sacramental theologies and views of ministry, and to begin to develop a coherent theology with which to address contemporary questions about sacraments and ministry.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:
Demonstrate an awareness of the biblical and theological resources relevant to the theology of at least two of Baptism, Eucharist and ministry.
Articulate an appreciation of the arguments on both sides of the church dividing issues relating to at least two of Baptism, Eucharist and ministry.
Critically discuss their own theological position in relation to two of Baptism, Eucharist and ministry.
Evaluate the theological and ecclesial significance of ecumenical convergence statements such as BEM and ARCIC.
